The javelina or collared peccary is a pig-like mammal that lives in deserts, dry woodlands, and chaparral in the southwestern USA and Mexico. They are called Javelina because of their razor-sharp tusks, the Spanish word for javelin or spear. They travel in small herds of 15-20 individuals, searching for food using their excellent sense of smell. Javelina eat a variety of plants, including prickly pear cactus, roots, plant bulbs, grass shoots, fruit, nuts, berries, mushrooms, as well as grubs, and eggs.

Desert bighorn sheep are a subspecies of the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. They live in dry desert mountain ranges, foothills near rocky cliffs, and water when it is available. They live in the barren, mostly waterless environment of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.

When summer temperatures become extreme and water sources dry up completely, Desert Bighorns rest most of the daylight hours and feed at night. During this season, they rely on desert plants for both food and moisture. They use their hooves and horns to remove spines from cacti, then eat the juicy insides. Desert bighorns eat a variety of desert plants and get most of their moisture from the vegetation.
